PI STUDIOS AND BOILER ROOM CELEBRATE THE POSITIVE CULTURAL IMPACT OF MIGRATION IN NEW DOCUMENTARY SERIES ‘MIGRANT SOUND

Episode 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0REeEvkj43g

Following the Windrush scandal it's clear that immigration remains a contentious topic across the Western world; so Pi Studios & Boiler Room created a new series exploring the different ways immigration has positively affected the UK’s musical culture over time. Through intergenerational storytelling, Migrant Sound aims to explore the similarities and shared experiences of the youth of the past and the youth of today.

Launching just ahead of London’s Notting Hill Carnival weekend, the first episode, Arrival, follows the fascinating stories of three Windrush migrants as they discover their heritage and the different ways in which music impacted their journeys to the UK.

Streaming exclusively across social media channels including Facebook Live, Youtube, IGTV and Boiler Room’s recently launched innovative platform, 4:3.

Migrant Sound is a youthful celebration of migration and its impact on the UK’s music and culture. Combining broad societal stories with personal family anecdotal histories, the series will allow for emotional storytelling mixed with vibrant visuals of migrant culture, told through the lens of youth past and present.

The first episode Arrival, out today, fast forwards viewers straight from the arrival of the first generation of Caribbean immigrants to the UK to this year’s Windrush scandal, showing the repeated challenges and disrespect that they have faced since their arrival. Boiler Room meets journalist Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff of Gal Dem, photographer Pogus Caesar and the Banton family from Peckham, who share how music helped them overcome the ignorance they met and shaped their identities, through multiple generations.

Three further episodes of Migrant Sound are scheduled for release in the coming weeks. Racism, Identity and Future Migrant Sound will give platform to the unheard stories of migrant culture, hearing from real members of the communities that have sparked some of the most vibrant cultural movements of the last century.
