Filosofia A special episode of El Chavo del Ocho caused much talk in Brazil. Through its social responsibility platform SBT do Bem, SBT, one of the largest TV channels in Brazil, deleted the main character of the show on the 35th anniversary of the series in the country, that was also the Childhood Day. The new episode was created to raise the awareness about child abandonment. The context couldn’t be better, since the Chavo is a boy living in a barrel who doesn’t know his parents or relatives and, in some episodes, even starves.

The stunt developed by WMcCann aimed to raise awareness by removing from the show one of the most beloved characters in the country. 35 years after the series debut in Brazil, it’s still a top-rated TV show. To do this, it was necessary to analyze SBT’s entire catalogue of episodes. After selecting compatible scenes from more than 200 chapters, the agency used the technique of rotoscopy to remove the Chavo, creating a new story. In the special episode featuring the original voice actors, the village characters notice that the Chavo is missing and start looking for him. This way, SBT ensured visibility to a social problem that is often invisible to the public eye.
