Nare Mokgotho

PORTFOLIO

After graduating from art school Nare persued a career in advertising as a copywriter and picked up a handful of awards in the process, before he made his move into production.

A true creative, Nare is also a practicing visual artist whose exhibited both locally and internationally, and whose honours include nominations for the Vera List Prize for Art and Politics, the MTN New Contemporaries and the Sasol New Signatures.

As a director Nare’s varied creative experiences are expressed in the strong conceptual grounding, pitch-perfect timing and humour that define his work.

A self-confessed cinephile who sees artistic merit everywhere, Marc has spent most of his life reading and studying film. It is his obsession, which encompasses all of his passions, including storytelling, music, photography, design and fashion.

Born in Toronto and raised in Johannesburg, Marc studied film at AFDA and joined the film industry after that. Although he was hired as a researcher/ director’s assistant in his first job, he directed his first commercial after a month. And, it won a Silver Loerie.

Marc considers himself primarily a storyteller, though his talents range from performance work through to more visually driven pieces. He is adept at eliciting magical performances.

He is passionate about visualising ideas and concepts, getting people to buy into it, creating it and having it resonate with audiences. And that’s why he believes that every project needs a director with authenticity and personal perspective; otherwise, the process is rudderless.

In 2001, when Marc was 23-years-old, his work was featured on the Saatchi and Saatchi New Director’s Showcase at Cannes. He still reflects on the enormous sense of self-belief this gave him, and how this propelled him into international work.

Working overseas in an extremely competitive market, helped Marc solidify the notion that you shoot every job like it’s your last. His ambition is to continue doing satisfying work across different sized canvases, including feature-length projects and short films.

Marc has directed many significant campaigns both locally and abroad. His clients have included KFC, Showmax, Jet, Total, Windhoek, Castle, Nandos, Harley-Davidson, Ford, Bidvest, Nedbank, Vodafone, Volkswagen, T-Mobile and Pepsi – as well as showcasing the beauty of the New York-based dance troupe Pilobolus.

In July 2017, Marc joined Massif and has valued the collaborative spirit ever since, saying that it cultivates a good balance of camaraderie and playfulness with hard work and high standards.

Before leaving film school, Dean Blumberg had already established himself as one of the new voices of South African Film. He wrote and directed a number of award winning short films and, after multiple festival wins, became one of South Africa's most awarded filmmakers.

His commercials career had an equally auspicious start when he won the Shots Young Director's award, a spot on Shots Magazine's new director's showcase, and Ad of the Year at Creative Circle.

Dean has a slew of international awards under his belt, including Cannes, One Show, London International, New York Advertising, Clios, Midas and Epica. He is the most awarded Director in the Creative Circle's history, having won Creative Circle's Ad of the Year three times, as well as additional 2nd and 3rd places in alternative years.

Dean is known for his sensitivity and delicate handling of subject matter. He is a born storyteller, with a chameleon-like ability to adapt and evolve. While he is at home directing in many genres, it is his work with actors that sets him apart and has made him a highly sought after director for international brands such as Coca Cola, Toyota, KFC, Miller, Ford, Dominos and Konica Minolta.

Gordon Lindsay

Gordon began his directing career at Velocity Films and has since collaborated with many of the country’s top agencies. In 2014, he joined newly appointed Executive Producer Peter Carr at bouffant, where his advancing career and aptitude for creating for visually-driven content has helped the company develop into a leading brand in the industry. He made the 2016 Young Director Award (YDA) shortlist at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity with his commercial for Dimension Data and Owen Kessel Leo Burnett.
He has directed campaigns for prominent brands like Mc Donald’s, KFC, Hunters and Penguin Random House, as well as award-winning music videos for leading South African artists.

Life before becoming a commercials director was naturally creative for Petar. He worked as an on-air and club DJ, an art director, a stylist and a set designer. He grew up in the ‘80s amongst a Belgrade art, film and music crowd exposing him to unique experiences. Petar was further influenced by his late uncle, Vlastimir Radovanovic, a renowned and talented director and writer.

This background shaped Petar’s passion for filmmaking and his visual style and execution. His realism and warmth in directing draws him to commercial ideas with human insight, truth and a sense of humour. His visual style is graphic and approachable, allowing space for the characters to breath.

Petar still finds the simple act of ‘unwrapping’ the script and exploring its endless potential as the highlight of his role as a director.

Inspired by great movies, TV shows and books, Petar is continuously reminded of what creativity really is while watching his two sons grow up. Being the father is amongst his list of most significant achievements, which is intertwined with his career success.

Another milestone accomplishment includes being a finalist at the NYC Festivals for the Consol TVC, which he describes as what is “easily the most honest and heartfelt piece of work” he ever did; his older son’s 16-week sonogram/scan is the last frame of that film.

Petar has shot ads for a comprehensive spectrum of brands. This long list includes Discovery, South African Airways, Lennon, Safaricom and Samsung. He also worked on a variety of projects for Reckitt Benckiser, Johnson & Johnson, Rhodes Food Group and Tiger Brands.
