Sherbet Directors

TADO

Mike and Katie are TADO, the UK based duo whose darkly adorable characters have been terrorising and delighting people world-wide for the past 10 years. The pair live and work in Sheffield, UK where they churn out fun for clients and happy people alike.

Their portfolio includes a vast range of projects from fashion through to advertising and their artwork has been exhibited worldwide with several international solo shows.

Everything they do is produced in total collaboration - whether it be taking turns in painting, scribbling or clicking.

SIOBHAN BOWERS

TONY COMLEY

Tony writes and directs animation. His work is beloved of violent historical documentary commissioners such as the BBC, Channel 4 and HBO.

He’s been known to tour the country in a transforming truck, teaching animation to children on behalf of the Tate, and lately has been sighted writing a TV series about the adventures of a bewildered tom-girl bat lost amid a vista of stars.

At Sherbet, Tony has most recently directed animated sequences for a documentary called “Smash & Grab: The Story of The Pink Panthers”, which is set for release next year. 

ANNA GINSBURG

Anna Ginsburg is a London-based filmmaker with a wide range of talents. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a 1st class BA (HONS) in animation. There is a visceral hand-crafted quality which defines all her work from stop-motion to traditional 2D and live action.

Anna's promo for Bombay Bicycle Club's 'How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?' won a Bafta for BEST NEW WORK at the 2012 NEW TATENT AWARDS and has been screened at an impressive list of festivals worldwide including Los Angeles, Edinburgh, New York and Hong Kong. Her 2D hand-drawn short 'Living with Depression' won the Depict! Award at Encounters 2012.

Anna has already worked with an impressive list of clients including Island Records, Christian Aid, The Wellcome Trust, BBC switch, Reebok, The BFI and DKA Architects. 

JONATHAN HODGSON

Jonathan Hodgson is an internationally renowned, BAFTA winning animation director based in London. He was born in Oxford and studied animation at Liverpool Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. In 2011 he directed the animation for Wonderland: The Trouble with Love and Sex, the first full length animated documentary on British TV.

After leaving the RCA in 1985, he went on to be a director at various animation studios before co-founding Sherbet in 1996. At Sherbet he directed numerous high profile advertising campaigns and collaborated with legendary illustrator Maurice Sendak.

His short films have won numerous awards including a BAFTA in 2000 for The Man with the Beautiful Eyes and a BAFTA nomination in 2002 for Camouflage.

Jonathan’s work is featured on numerous books and DVD compilations. He has lectured extensively including the Royal College of Art, University of the Creative Arts Farnham and Film Akademie Barden Wurtemburg, Germany. In 2008 he became the programme leader for the new BA in Animation at Middlesex University.

He continues to combine teaching with animated filmmaking and recently made a short animation for Amnesty International as a spearhead for their End the Death Penalty campaign. 

LAURIE J PROUD

Laurie was born in Newcastle and moved to London at the age of 19 to work as a storyboard artist. He later studied at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1999 with a MA in animation, and has since worked as a director / animator.

Laurie loves to draw and has recently published his collection of comic book work “Peepholes” at Blank State.

Laurie is a gifted craftsman who has played a key role on a number of successful Sherbet productions in recent years, from directing Sony Vaio’s “Snow Angel” short to storyboarding BBC’s “The Trouble With Love and Sex” documentary and designing the characters for IRN Bru’s “Butcher” commercial. 

THE PLANT

BOUWINE POOL

Bouwine was born and raised in Amsterdam where she still lives with her husband and son. In 2000, she graduated from the Utrecht school of the Arts (HKU) and has since been working as a 2D director and animator.

Bouwine enjoys getting involved at every stage of the creative process, from brainstorming on new concept ideas to creating outstanding designs and animation.

She is currently working on her own independent film “Bei mir bist du schon” while her latest Sherbet collaboration features animated illustrations interacting with super model Kate Moss! 

ALEX ROBINSON

Alex is an Director / Animator / Illustrator based in London. He graduated from Kingston University with a BA (hons) in Illustration / Animation.

Alex has exhibited work at D&AD New Blood, London Sinfonietta and was also included in One Dot Zero Adventures in Motion 2008, Encounters 2009 with his film “London” which was screened at South Banks’ BFI, plus a number of other festivals and venues around the world.

Alex has directed and designed innovative moving image work across the broad spectrum of both commercial and non-commercial strands of visual arts. His most recent directorial piece through Sherbet is a stunning fashion week Land Rover promo in which a car morphs into a catwalk model! 

SARAH ROPER

TIM SAGAR

Tim has spent seven years developing his animation skills, working on TV series, commercials, pop promos and feature films. He made his directorial debut on BBC’s cutting edge animated comedy series Monkey Dust in 2003, providing the show with many of its most notorious moments.

“… like all the best satire, it all adds up to a pretty savage portrait of mankind, but one that makes addictive viewings.” (The Guardian)

Other directing highlights include animated sequences for documentaries such as the award-winning Bodyshock film “The Man Who Ate His Lover” and “What We Still Don’t Know” for Channel 4, and a string of cartoons for BBC Comedy online.

Tim his currently working with Sherbet on the development of a self scripted black comedy animated film, which has received praise and support from both the British Council and the BFI. 

TOM SENIOR

Tom is a Leeds-born animator and graduate of the Royal College of Art.

He has been a regular part of the Sherbet team since 2009 and joined the roster of directors earlier this year, bringing with him an enthusiasm for all things hand-drawn.

As well as a charming collection of short animations, Tom has a rapidly expanding portfolio that encompasses a range of media disciplines, from television documentaries to music promos.

Recent clients include BBC Panorama, the NSPCC and new indie rock band The Dead Fronts.
