How a German rapper hacked the charts

Ogilvy plays with Spotify features to help rap artist Cro fly higher.

All artists want to reach the pinnacle of the pop charts, but with the proliferation of video platforms, audiences are fragmented. However, Universal Music and Ogilvy managed to get the rap artist Cro’s music video to the top of the German Spotify rankings with a trick using the platform’s own tools. They created a “playlist” of titles lasting around eight seconds, each illustrated with a segment of the video instead of the standard cover image. Result: 1 million Spotify views in less than 12 hours. The exposure allowed Cro to soar to the top of the German charts – and Ogilvy won several prizes for its innovative use of the medium.
