Are You REAL ID Ready?

There has been plenty of conversation surrounding the REAL ID Act in the media, however, surprisingly, not many actually know what it’s all about or that it affects them. Passed by Congress in 2005, the Act enabled the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation for the Federal Government to set forth standards for sources of identification, like state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs1.

On January 22nd, 2018, phase 3 of the REAL ID Act went into effect, at which time the TSA started requiring REAL ID compliant identification, in order for travelers to board domestic flights as well as enter military bases and federal facilities. Acceptable forms of REAL ID include driver’s licenses with additional security features and federal passports.

Over the past 13 years, 29 states have met the standards required to be compliant with the new legislation. Fortunately, most of the non-compliant states have received extensions allowing residents to continue using their current state-issued IDs through October 10, 2018. At the federal government’s discretion, if still not compliant by then, those states will either be granted another extension, or residents will be required to use a compliant form of ID, such as a passport. This is where Hilton Hotels & Resorts saw an opportunity.

In 2017, Hilton learned that 60% of Americans do not hold a valid passport2. In response, Hilton conducted a survey of their own, which found that those with passports are often happier than those without3. With this information, as well as the imminent launch of phase 3 of the REAL ID Act, Hilton and Eventive have teamed up to launch the Hilton Passport Project. We are on a cross-country tour offering passport photos, applications, and informational assistance through a full-service concierge in Hilton fashion, including a collaboration with the U.S. Department of State. We encourage guests to get out there and travel the world, as well as prepare them for the new requirements, so they can avoid the headache of missing a flight due to insufficient ID.

In addition, many parents are unaware that when filing for their children’s passports, both parents need to be present. To alleviate this inconvenience, we have the necessary forms on-site along with certified notaries among our smiling brand ambassadors, to allow one parent to authorize the other to apply on their children’s behalf.

Hilton’s collaboration with the U.S. Department of State offers friendly and comprehensive passport acceptances including application review, on-site payment, as well as appointments for those applying for the first time. As of March 1st, we have helped over 3,200 Americans in getting their passport and are excited to help many more!

3. Hilton Hotels & Resorts commissioned a 15-minute, online survey among a nationally-representative sample of 1,000 U.S. adults ages 18+ that have traveled within and/or outside of the U.S. in the past 12 months. The margin of error for this sample is +/- 3.1% at the 95% confidence level. The survey was fielded by Edelman Intelligence between May 30 and June 6, 2017.
