Concrete + Clay Signs Director Declan Whitebloom

Coming over from seven years at RSA/Black Dog Films, Whitebloom now joins Concrete + Clay’s innovative team, where he’ll be represented for both commercial and music video work.

Declan Whitebloom is the model of a multifaceted director. His reel features witty and beautifully directed campaigns for brands like Target, Fiat, Nissan, Carl's Jr, Lipton, Big Lots, Toyota and Spotify, among many others. Longer-format projects include the Sci-Fi Channel’s hit eight-part documentary series Prophets of Science Fiction, produced and hosted by Ridley Scott, along with the short film Blackbird, a modern day psychological thriller which made waves on the 2015 film festival circuit.

Whitebloom combines cinematic imagery with the ability to capture authentic performances from his subjects. This skill has led him to become a trusted collaborator with high-profile celebrity talent, most notably with Taylor Swift. Throughout their ongoing creative relationship, Whitebloom has helmed three of Swift’s videos, including the smash hit “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and a Toyota campaign starring Taylor for the Chinese market.  Recently, Whitebloom journeyed to Havana, Cuba to shoot the stunning clip for Jess Glynne’s “Ain’t Got Far To Go,” adding to his star-studded (and award-laden) music video repertoire which includes work with One Direction, Leona Lewis, Hilary Duff, Demi Lovato, Carly Rae Jepsen, The Fray and many more.

A native of London, Whitebloom grew up in a family obsessed with film. Before he was even a teenager, he spent an incredible amount of time watching his older brother Monty Whitebloom (half of the duo that is BIG TV) direct music videos. After graduating from university, Whitebloom moved straight to LA where he knocked off countless hours on sets, working in nearly every capacity including behind the camera, and from PA to the art department. Then he began a long stint as an editor, where he really fine-tuned his craft as a storyteller. These varied and valuable skills now help Declan at his home among the crew of like-minded creators at Concrete + Clay.

“From the outset, Concrete + Clay has been driven and focused on adapting to today's media landscape,” says Declan. “I really admire the work they do; they're adventurous, nimble, and able to roll with the punches. I’m excited to see what happens.”

The traits Whiebloom admires in Concrete + Clay are undoubtedly reflected in his own varied artistic pursuits. Last year he was involved in the creation of Banksy's Dismaland installation, acting under the “cover” of a director filming a fake movie, thereby allowing the elusive street artist to build a massive, sinister twist on Disneyland under the guise that it was Whitebloom and his crew building a set.

Declan Whitebloom is welcomed to Concrete + Clay by founder Dewey Nicks along with Executive Producers Carrie McLaren and Mike Brady. McLaren remarks: “I’m excited about the energy Declan brings. His smart sense of humor comes through so clearly in his storytelling - it’s genuine and razor sharp. That combined with a very unique visual style and his exceptional art direction is pretty impressive! We are already prepping his first awarded project with us!”

Mike Brady echoes her enthusiasm, saying, “I love that Declan has such a depth of experience telling beautiful, compelling stories. As an editor, you learn what you need and what you wish had been shot. Declan knows this, and it’s helped him become the fantastic director he is today. It’s a pleasure to welcome him to our family!”

The latest addition to their versatile ensemble furthers Concrete + Clay’s ability to package stories in multiple formats, enabling them to deliver visually captivating stories across print, motion and digital media.
